Designers love positive clients. Clients love positive designers. Experts tell us to focus on our goals. How to be sustainable. Select sustainable design. Reduce our carbon footprint.
These goals require some thought before they become second nature to us. At vacation time, our goals become simpler. Have fun and see some whales!
During my annual sea kayaking trip with my sisters, fun was a very easily attainable goal. However, killer whales had shown up only briefly one day the previous week and no one could predict when the giant mammals would return to their salmon feeding grounds in the ecological reserve Robson Bight in Johnstone Strait. There are only 80 Resident Orcas in the northern Vancouver Island population.
We selected Pacific_Northwest_Expeditions to guide us this year in our quest to see Orcas, because of their experience and because of their camp located close to the only protected sanctuary for killer whales on the west coast of Canada. Even their expertise could not guarantee Orca sightings!
Our guides Brian (also owner) and Erin catered to all our needs in an ecofriendly manner with lots of organic produce from Brian’s garden. The days were cool and rainy. Our spirits remained high and we focused on our goal of Orcas with positive persistence. The shortwave radio offered no Orca sightings anywhere in the vicinity. Shakespeake said, “nothing is either good or bad but thinking makes it so”.
We marvelled at the birds – Bald Eagles, Varied Thrushes. Hundreds of Pacific White Sided Dolphins graced the misty strait. We paddled and explored the tidal pools, keeping cheerful.
The final morning, Brian announced we would stay in camp until after lunch to give the Orcas more time to find us. Magically, the A5 pod of a mother, new calf, older daughter and a brother was sighted along the coast in Robson Bight and they were heading right past our beach! Low tide gave us excellent viewing from shore.
Focusing on our goals and keeping a strongly positive attitude makes for a wonderful vacation and a wonderful life. Refreshed, we are back at work, motivating people to select the coolest shade of green for sustainable design!
