Faded Hardwood Floor

faded_hardwood_250.jpgA while ago you installed a beautiful hardwood floor with a gorgeous environmentally friendly rug to anchor your well chosen furniture.

A few months have passed and suddenly you notice the wood floor next to the window has faded. You lift the rug back and your suspicions are confirmed!

What to do now?  Maybe this hasn’t happened to you yet.  Either way, refinishing the wood should be a last resort. It costs time, money, disruption, valuable energy resources, and unwanted dust in the home. Refinishing is to be avoided for as long as possible.

It is normal that...

light will change the colour of wood over time.  Sunlight will speed this process and a south facing window makes the change all the more dramatic and speedy.  Window coverings that block most of the light in the summer will reduce this problem while preserving the cooler air inside the home.  In winter, allow some filtered light into the room during the day to warm the space while shielding the ‘bleaching’ rays of the sun from the hardwood.

Complete the window treatment with draperies.  Lined draperies are an excellent addition for beauty, and their thermal layer in winter will keep the room warmer without raising the thermostat as high.

Consider motorized treatments which can work on a timer or light sensor if you are too busy to monitor them everyday.  The energy savings in the home can outweigh the cost of the motorization and the refinishing.  The hardwood floors, your heating bill and the environment will thank you!
